This tip, demonstrate how to use the "where" field to correctly link to a Google Maps address of your preference.
To make the names short, I will use GMaps
when refer to the Google Maps service, and GCal
to refer to Google Calendar service.
when refer to the Google Maps service, and GCal
to refer to Google Calendar service.
When inserting an event, on the "where" field, normally you would type an address like "Ellis st, 23" or something like that. And expect that bunch of string can be used to open GMaps at the specified address. The fact is that it doesn't work (at least for me in Brazil), and when clicked GMaps doesn't displays the map we want.
To correctly make the "where" field useful to open the exact GMap, follow the steps.
Steps:
1) Open the GMaps and select the exact view you want
2) Copy the URL from the "Link to this page" hyperlink
![]() |
3) Adjust the URL
The following excerpt needs to be removed from the URL
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=
Before
http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=Bras%C3%ADlia,+Brazil&ie=UTF8&z=18&ll=-15.792548,-47.822639&spn=0.001972,0.004361&t=h&om=0
![]() |
After
Bras%C3%ADlia,+Brazil&ie=UTF8&z=18&ll=-15.792548,-47.822639&spn=0.001972,0.004361&t=h&om=0
![]() |
4) Paste on the "where" field
5) That's it, see an GCal entry sample
Take a look at the status bar
![]() |
GCal uses the "where" field to put as a value to the "q" paramter of GMaps query.
